What causes angioedema?

Food stuffs like eggs, nuts, seafood, milk, and berries can cause IgE-mediated angioedema. Some medicines like antibiotics, aspirin, and antihypertensive drugs can result in the situation as well. It has also been reported that angioedema can seem along with some autoimmune illnesses.

Hereditary angioedema is an autosomal dominant disorder of C1 inhibitor (C1 INH), which causes uncontrolled activation of the classical complement pathway. It is characterized by recurrent self-limited attacks involving the skin, subcutaneous tissues, respiratory tract, or gastrointestinal tract. GI or upper respiratory tract attacks might be precipitated by neighborhood trauma, such as these from dental procedures or tonsillectomy. Idiopathic angioedema appears to manifest due to direct mast cell-releasign agents in specific compounds like radiocontrast media or opiates.
